Be careful with who you surround yourself with

Proverbs 1:10-19

My son, if sinful men entice you,
do not give in to them.
If they say, “Come along with us;
let’s lie in wait for innocent blood,
let’s ambush some harmless soul;
let’s swallow them alive, like the grave,
and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
we will get all sorts of valuable things
and fill our houses with plunder;
cast lots with us;
we will all share the loot”—
my son, do not go along with them,
do not set foot on their paths;
for their feet rush into evil,
they are swift to shed blood.
How useless to spread a net
where every bird can see it!
These men lie in wait for their own blood;
they ambush only themselves!
Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain;
it takes away the life of those who get it.

I am not sure about you, but I know I don’t have any friends that try to entice me to ambush some poor innocent soul. I would like to think that as Christians, even if we have friends who would try to entice us, we would know better than to listen to them.  Knowing this, I am quick to dismis this set of verses. However better judgement tells me otherwise. We may not easily enticed by our friends to go ambush some innocent, so how can these verses relate to us? How about our friends who invited us to do things that aren’t necessary the Christian, or things that may damage our relationship with Christ. Friends that invite us to go to that movie that is easily controversial, that is full of things that is not Christ pleasing (Any rated R ‘comedy’ movie). How about our friends that have filthy mouths? Every where you go their is constant filth coming out of their mouth, a mouth full of sin. Their actions are full of sin as well. The ones that make no attempt to please God. Can’t these friends be the same as the men in this passage from Proverbs?

for their feet rush into evil,
they are swift to shed blood.

These men lie in wait for their own blood;
they ambush only themselves!
Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain;
it takes away the life of those who get it.

The description fits! They are quick to rush into sin. They find great joy and satisfaction in their sin, even brag about it. Are they swift to shed blood? Of course! Christ’s blood!

They lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush only themselves! Of course! These are the people that go out seeking satisfaction to themselves. But in reality, all they end up doing is digging a bigger hole for their satisfaction. It is like trying to fill a hole with acid. Sure, you may be able to fill it, but once you do fill it, the acid is going to burn on the inside causing pain, and it is going to burn the hole bigger. So they are only ambushing themselves when they invite all this sin into their lives.

Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it. To sum it all up, be careful in the activities you are participating in. Be careful for the words that come out of your mouth. Be careful for the thoughts that lie within your head. They may give you some sort of satisfaction in the time. “we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder” but in the end it is taking away your life. It’s separating you from Christ.

  1. A quick comment. I do not mean to say not hang out with friend who lead us to sin. We all lead each other to sin. We are all guilty of this. I simply mean to watch yourself. Know the things that has potential to push us away from Christ. Pray for those who lead you into sin. Point the way back to Christ to those people.

    1. And besides, if we are never around sinful people (meaning non-Christians), then how effectively are we sharing the gospel?

      One of the types of people I have been thinking about this week as I have researched and prayed over the passages I am writing on over at Proverbial Thought is New Atheists. They not only fight to remove religion in any form, but they proudly gloat about their intelligence and people whom they have “saved” from religion. That is definitely being quick to shed Christ’s blood!

      Good word!

      1. Yes, exactly. We need to hang with sinners to share the Gospel. It’s what Jesus did.

        Atheists are scary. They fit into this passage perfectly! You are very right!

        Thanks, and I look forward to reading Proverbial Thought everyday! (Always immediately after I post, I go and check out what you guys had to say on the same matter)

        God Bless!

  2. Wise words Josh! There is an old thought that goes like this: “Show me your friends and I will tell you who you are.”

    1. We are a product of our environment. Christian friends are very hard to find. This school year I transferred to a public university and I was so afraid of not being able to find christian friends, let alone one! With much prayer God has given me a really good christian friend right away. She actually follows your blog now. Her name is Anna, and I totally recommended you to her!

      YOU DID?! Oh my goodness I am totally shocked! Well thank you very much!! That means a lot! As soon as I get to a computer I am going to have to check that out! Thanks so much!

      God bless you Sarah!

      1. It is definitely hard to find Christian friends on a public campus. There are some Christian students on my campus but they are pretty cliquey. They haven’t been very nice or welcoming. I have been hanging out with some some non-Christians in my dorm in hopes of telling them about Jesus. But, we can’t fully be friends because we don’t share the same faith. I follow Anna’s blog, she seems like a really cool person! I am happy God brought you a Christian friend. 🙂

  3. I didn’t see the entire comment, whoops! You’re welcome! I really enjoy your blog, and I was happy to nominate you! Thanks for standing up for what is right and for being an example for other young Christians! Blessings, Sarah

    1. I am sorry to hear about your experience with other christians on you campus! It seems to be like their hearts aren’t exactly in the right place. I guess that’s what God wants with you though. If we were to be surrounded with other Christians it becomes to easy to be a Christian and we often become luke warm. But if we are separated from Christians we are forced to either be completely with God, or completely separated, giving no time to be luke warm.

      When you are hanging out with non-Christians, please make sure you don’t think of them as targets to evangelize to. Instead, just make sure your words and actions are a mirror image of God. Eventually, they will become interested in how different you are from them and ask questions. It’s a slow process, but it’s not something you can always rush. It scares people.

      Yeah, she has been a great friend. I have a few other Christian friends I have found, but she’s just the one with the most Christ seeking heart.

      Well thank you very much! I can’t wait to look it up! You are very much welcome. Example. I love that word! It’s what I strive to be. An example to everyone around me. It’s what I pray for.

      Thanks again, and sorry for the long reply! lol God Bless!

  4. I have struggled with loneliness throughout my schooling, and I think that God is using it in my life so that I can help others who are feeling lonely. God has a plan and purpose for everything that I have gone through, although is hasn’t been easy at times. God has taught me so much, and I have grown so much in my relationship with Him.

    It is just too bad that some of the Christians aren’t very welcoming because it makes it hard for non-Christians to feel welcome and come to the weekly meetings.

    I definitely understand what you mean about not making them a target. I just try to be an example for them and show them love. I pray for them everyday that they will come to know Christ. I try not to push anything on them.

    You should check out For King & Country’s The Proof of You Love, it reminds me of being an example 🙂

    I enjoy reading your blog and being able to talk to you about whats it like to be a Christian young person!

    Blessings,
    Sarah

    1. I love how God uses all of our situations and backgrounds, even the worse of things, He uses for His benefit. There’s nothing He can’t use. The more we struggle, the more He can use us.

      Well all you can do is just pray for them. Pray they are more welcoming and open to other students.

      Yeah, I thought you would know that, I just wanted to reiterate it. Good, that’s all you can do. I’ll pray for both you and them.

      Okay, I’ll check that out right now!

      Thanks! And same to you! It’s great being able to communicate to other Christians.

      Peace,
      Josh H.

      1. It is so cool how God can use all different situations to bring Him glory and to shape us into the people He wants us to be. I should definitely pray for the Christian group on campus. Thanks so much for your prayers–they are much appreciated!

        Blessings,
        Sarah

        1. Jeremiah 18 <– God the potter shaping our lives.

          Prayer is the simplest, but most effective tool any Christian can use. Never underestimate it. Yes, no problem at all! Anything to help out!

          God Bless,
          Josh H.
