Proverbs 5:15-20 (NIV)
Drink water from your own cistern,
running water from your own well.
Should your springs overflow in the streets,
your streams of water in the public squares?
Let them be yours alone,
never to be shared with strangers.
May your fountain be blessed,
and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.
A loving doe, a graceful deer —
may her breasts satisfy you always,
may you ever be intoxicated with her love.
Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s wife?
Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman?
Proverbs 5:15-20 (KJV)
Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.
Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets.
Let them be only thine own, and not strangers’ with thee.
Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.
Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.
And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?
I like the illustration of water and purity here. It’s a pretty simple illustration. Your water begins as being completely purified and we are suppose to keep it this way, so that upon our marriage we may give our spouse our clean water to drink. The unity of marriage gives us the gift of being able to drink our spouses water. We have to keep in mind though that your (future) spouse, as well as your self, is extremely thirsty for water and you have to be able to provide water to your spouse for the rest of his or her life. This means we can’t give away our water and we can’t contaminate it. If we do so, we are going to make each other sick and not have enough to provide for our spouse.
There are lots of ways to contaminate our water and in todays day it is very easy to do so. Think to yourself what are some of the ways, obvious or not so obvious, of contaminating your water; what are some ways or making you less pure? What things do you do in your life that may contaminate your water? How is the content that you are watching on tv, listening to in music, viewing online, talking about with friends/coworkers, and etc affecting your water? Take a closer look into what are doing. A good challenge to do, especially when you are watching tv, is count how many times during the program you are watching, that they reference or joke about something that may contaminate your water. One or two contaminations may not do much, but little by little they add up. If you take a cup of water and squeeze one drop of black dye in it, no one will know the difference. But if you continually put in drip by drip, you will turn your water black. The more contaminated your water gets, the more your water turns to mud. Would you like to serve mud to your spouse?
We must also be careful not to give our water out to others. When we do that we loose some of our water, and we also contaminate it with whatever they have in their water. The results are horrifying.
Keep your water pure. Keep it to yourself. That way you may be able to provide your spouse with clean water, day after day. The great news is, even if you do loose some water or contaminate it, there is a way to get it back, and purify it: Jesus. Jesus makes us pure again as long as we seek Him and ask for it.
