Proverbs 3:7-8 (NIV)
Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the LORD and shun evil.
This will bring health to your body
and nourishment to your bones.
Proverbs 3:7-8 (KJV)
Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.
Lately I have been appreciating the KJV bible. In the past I never read it because it was hard to understand, so I stuck with the NIV because it was what I was raised with. I am finding myself to see things in a completely different point of view when reading the KJV, I also really appreciate that my bible app, YouVersion, has greek definitions of words in the KJV as footnotes.
I like the words “Navel” and “marrow” being used in the KJV. It makes me think of in infant in a mothers womb. All the nutrients we get is through our navel. The umbilical cord connects us to our mother and gives us her nutrients through our navel. It is just like our relationship with God. God supplies us with our health, both physical and spiritual. He protects, feeds us, and transformers us through His Word.
And what about “marrow to they bones.” When we think of bone marrow we usually first think of the soft tissue inside of our bones, that helps give it density. In our life with Christ that can be the same as the fear of the Lord is what fills us on the inside, it is what gives us Christ. Where as this is true, this is not the main function of bone marrow. The main function of bone marrow is to help regulate our blood cells, and it is a key part in our immune system.
(I’m trying to avoid getting technical with the functions in anatomy at the cellular level, because it can get long.) We all understand the importance of blood to our body. It is key to supply nutrients and oxygen to all the different parts of our body as well as healing our wounds. When we loose a lot of blood (i.e. donating blood) we are avised to take it easy the next few days, without the normal amount of blood our body cannot function as well.
When we are still in our mother’s womb, and early on as a baby, are bones are still largely bone marrow waiting to be calcified and turned into the hard bone that we have as adults. At an early age our bone marrow is a key part to how our bodys will be formed.
I say all this because the fear of the Lord is essential for our daily life. It is essential for our growth and protection. Humble yourself before the Lord and He will provide you with your daily nutrients. Stay way from evil, do not let it shape you. Do not let evil become part of your daily nutrient to your body. Fear the Lord and seek Him, He will give you the proper nutrients in to become the person you are to be. He forms us, like a potter forms his clay.
Yet, O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand
