Proverbs 1:8-9
Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They are a garland to grace your head
and a chain to adorn your neck.
The other week, during the Ten Commandments, I wrote about honoring your father and mother. As we go through Proverbs we will start to see a common thread here. Over and over again, Solomon writes about honoring our parents. God gave our parents the duties of raising us. We need to trust in His (His not ours) dision to put our parents over us. Why? Who else, on earth, knows our thought patterns? Who else knows what we are like? We are replicates of our parents, to put plainly we are our a younger version of our parents. Our parents have gone through all the same stuff we have, and they know the results. Because our parents are us, with a lot more experience and wisdom under their belts we should honor them. Our fathers instructions for us, is for us to follow. We follow his instructions because he knows what we should be doing. We follow our mothers teachings because she knows who we are, and what we need to be taught. Our parents know better than us, we should look to them for wisdom. “Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.” This doesn’t just apply to our earthly father and mother, but our Heavenly Father and Mother. God being our Father, has given us a list of instructions, the Ten Commandments. Our Mother, being the Church, is full of teachings for us.
They are a garland to grace your head
and a chain to adorn your neck
Looking up ‘garland’ in the dictionary you can see that it is definid by being a prize and a wreath of flowers and leaves, worn on the head or hung as a decoration. And than we see “a chain to adorn your neck.” Our father’s instructions, and mother’s teaching should be seen as a reward! As a sign of beauty! We are blessed to have them in our lives. Receive from that what we can, while we still can! At some point we will no longer be able to receive the blessings of wisdom from them. Take it while you can.
(p.s. I notice I write a lot about respecting our parents. The truth is, I love my parents dearly. They have taught me so many valuable lessons. I may not have always been able to see this, but I am glad I do now. I wish for everyone to be thankful for their parents, no matter what may be between you)
